One of the primary reasons for abstaining from tea and coffee is the fast’s strict no-water policy. Tea and coffee (how to make instant coffee at home), despite being liquids, can be dehydrating due to their caffeine content. “Caffeine acts as a diuretic, which can increase urine production and potentially lead to dehydration,” explains Dr Kumar. During the fast, maintaining hydration is crucial, and consuming caffeinated beverages might counteract this goal.

Dr Kumar highlights that drinking tea or coffee on an empty stomach can lead to acidity and digestive discomfort. “When you consume tea or coffee without any food, the acid levels in your stomach can rise, causing heartburn or gastritis. This can make the fasting period quite uncomfortable,” he says.
While some people may turn to tea or coffee for a quick energy boost, Dr Kumar advises caution. “The temporary alertness provided by caffeine can lead to a crash later, making you feel more tired. Additionally, the lack of solid food to absorb the caffeine can lead to jitters and anxiety,” he explains.

In modern times, some women choose to modify the traditional fast by allowing themselves small sips of water, tea, or coffee to maintain energy levels and prevent severe dehydration. Dr Kumar acknowledges these adaptations but stresses the importance of moderation and listening to one’s body. “If you decide to have tea or coffee, limit it to one small cup and ensure it’s not too strong. Opt for herbal teas that are caffeine-free and gentle on the stomach,” he suggests.
