After Kate Middleton's recent time away from public life due to an operation in January, people have been guessing about her health and personal life. But now, she's come forward to talk about it herself.

In a heartfelt video message, Princess Catherine shared that her diagnosis came after the abdominal surgery she underwent in January at the London Clinic. She emphasised, "In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous." "I am currently undergoing preventative chemotherapy," the Princess stated.

While the news hit hard, another detail in her message piqued public interest, "preventative chemotherapy."

This term sent a ripple of curiosity through the public. Unlike the familiar image of gruelling chemotherapy used to fight active cancer, "preventative" hints at a different strategy entirely. But what exactly is this?

We spoke to Dr Sreenivass BJ, a Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist at HCG Cancer Centre, to shed light on preventative chemotherapy. Here's what Dr. BJ has to say.

Dr Sreenivass BJ, explains, "Preventative chemotherapy, also known as chemoprevention, uses medication to reduce the risk of cancer in individuals with a heightened risk due to genetics or other factors."

Dr BJ continues, "These medications work by interrupting the processes that lead to cancer development. There are two main types: antioxidants, which fight cell damage, and anti-inflammatory agents, which can help reduce inflammation linked to cancer risk." While specific details about the Princess's treatment plan haven't been disclosed, Dr BJ sheds light on what preventative chemotherapy might entail.

"The specific medications used and course of treatment depend on the individual's situation and type of cancer," he explains. "Typically, preventative chemotherapy involves a series of cycles delivered over a period of months."

Side Effects Of Preventive Chemotherapy

"Preventative chemotherapy can cause side effects similar to those experienced during treatment for diagnosed cancer," cautions Dr BJ. "These may include fatigue, nausea, hair loss, and mouth sores. However, the severity of side effects can vary depending on the medication used and individual factors."

Dr BJ says, "The recovery timeline varies depending on the type and intensity of treatment. Generally, patients experience the most significant side effects during active treatment cycles, with symptoms improving over time."
