India witnessed its first major Ebola case of 2026 after a 28-year-old woman from Uganda was quarantined in Bengaluru following mild health symptoms. The traveller, who arrived via Ahmedabad, reported body aches after reaching the city and was immediately isolated at the State-run Epidemic Diseases Hospital as a precautionary measure. Although initial tests conducted at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune returned negative for Ebola, health authorities decided to keep her under observation until a second test confirms the result after 48 hours. The incident has raised concern due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa, especially Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
What Is Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)?
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare but highly dangerous viral infection that can lead to severe internal bleeding, organ failure, and death if not treated quickly. The disease belongs to the viral haemorrhagic fever family and has historically recorded fatality rates ranging from 25 to 90 per cent, depending on the strain. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is still no approved vaccine or specific treatment available.

How Does Ebola Spread?
Ebola does not spread through the air like influenza or COVID-19. The virus spreads only through direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, sweat, vomit, urine, or other secretions from an infected person or contaminated surfaces. People can also contract the disease through contact with infected animals or deceased individuals carrying the virus. The incubation period usually ranges from 2 to 21 days.

Ebola Symptoms Everyone Should Know
Early symptoms of Ebola often resemble common viral infections, making early diagnosis difficult. Some of the most common symptoms include:
Sudden fever
Severe body aches
Extreme weakness and fatigue
Headache
Sore throat
Vomiting and diarrhoea
Internal or external bleeding in severe cases
Health experts stress that immediate isolation and testing remain essential whenever symptoms appear in travellers arriving from affected regions.

Why India Is On High Alert For Ebola In 2026
The Bengaluru incident has prompted Indian authorities to intensify screening and surveillance at airports and international entry points. The Union Health Ministry has also advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Ebola-affected countries including Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan. Officials have urged the public not to panic or spread misinformation, emphasising that no confirmed Ebola case has been reported in India so far in 2026.
