Ginger is a popular herb known for its intense, spicy flavor and warming aroma, but in addition to making your food tastier, it has a centuries-old history of being used for medicinal purposes in Ayurveda. In fact, even today, it is still used as a home remedy for upset stomach or indigestion and for other ailments, but the question remains: Can ginger benefit people with type 2 diabetes?
Several studies have shown that ginger may help lower blood sugar levels and regulate insulin response in diabetics. According to a study published in the journal Planta Medica, suggested that ginger may help improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes in the long term.
Another study published in the Journal Planta Medica stated that ginger is loaded with gingerols, a component that improves the uptake of glucose into muscle cells without using insulin, and can, therefore, help in the management of high blood sugar levels.
Also, an animal study in 2014 showed that obese rats who ate cinnamon and ginger mixture experienced a wealth of benefits - such as decreased sugar levels, increased insulin levels, reduced body fat mass and weight, etc.
A study published in the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine stated that ginger powder improved glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes who were not on insulin, after three months of supplementation.
As per United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) data, a 100 grams serving of raw ginger root contains 80 calories, 2 gram dietary fibre and 1.82 grams protein.
