Acne or pimples are common skin issues that everyone experiences in their lifetime across a certain age bracket, regardless of their gender. Though it's a normal skin issue which subsides with time, there is a prevailing myth that it might be an indicator of skin cancer. We spoke to Dr Sachin Trivedi, Director- of Medical Oncology, HCG Cancer Center, Colaba to understand the correlation between pimples and skin cancer.
Dr Sachin Trivedi highlighted that pimples are the result of blocked pores, hormonal changes, stress, or diet; therefore, it has no relation to cancer.
“Cancer is defined as the out-of-control division of cells in the body. Nevertheless, pimples are the general consequence of blocked pores or any other simple skin diseases that do not pose harm,” he added.

He further explained that while some cancers do change the texture of the skin, it does not mean that pimples are a result of cancer. For the most part, pimples have nothing to do with any cancers out there.
According to Dr Trivedi, certain signs could indicate a more severe illness such as skin cancer. He suggests being alert for skin symptoms that either improve or worsen with basic skin care, any changes in the moles you already have, or the emergence of new moles.
Skin changes such as skin thickening or the formation of lumps that are not normal can also be a reason to be worried, he added.
