A bowl of fruits is always a good addition to your daily diet and many of us have that platter in the morning, afternoon, or evening. However, several have the notion that having citrus fruits like pineapple, orange, and sweet lime (mosambi) after sunset can cause digestive issues. But is it a fact or myth? We asked an expert and this is what she has to say.

Can You Have Citrus Fruits After Sunset?

According to Ms. Simrat Kathuria, CEO and Head Dietitian, The Diet Xperts, citrus fruits are loaded with vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants and are thus "an excellent choice for promoting overall health."

She admits that the idea that they should not be consumed after the sun sets "may stem from the belief that their high acid content could lead to discomfort, such as acid reflux or indigestion, particularly when the body’s digestive system tends to slow down during the night."

"However, this claim lacks substantial scientific backing," Ms. Kathuria states, adding, "While it’s true that some people may experience mild acidity or bloating after consuming citrus fruits at night, this response varies from person to person and isn’t universally applicable."

By this, she means several factors, such as "individual digestion, pre-existing conditions (such as acid reflux or GERD), and the overall diet of the person," might play a more significant role in deciding how a person's body reacts to eating citrus fruits like pineapple, orange, and sweet lime in the evening than the time of day itself.

"In fact, these fruits can still be beneficial even when eaten later in the day. For instance, the high water content in citrus fruits can help with hydration, and the fiber aids in digestion, supporting bowel regularity. Plus, vitamin C helps in immune function, which is important throughout the day, including at night," Ms. Kathuria highlights.

A Word Of Caution From The Expert

Despite whatever is stated above, Ms. Kathuria points out that anything in moderation can prevent digestive issues. "If you find that eating acidic fruits at night consistently causes indigestion or heartburn, it may be wise to consume them earlier in the day or opt for fruits that are less acidic," she observes.

"But for most people, there is no concrete reason to avoid these nutrient-packed fruits after sunset. It’s about understanding your body’s signals and adjusting your diet accordingly," Ms. Kathuria wraps up.
