Warning Signs of Liver Disorders During Pregnancy

Liver Disorders During Pregnancy: Every year on April 19, we observe World Liver Day and raise awareness about liver health worldwide. For 2026, the theme of ‘World Liver Day’ is kept as ‘Solid Habits, Strong Liver’. While keeping a check on your liver’s health is important for everyone, it becomes more essential when you get pregnant. Pregnancy transforms your body in extraordinary ways, but sometimes all these new changes can quietly be putting your liver under a lot of stress. People can also ignore early symptoms of liver disorder as normal pregnancy changes that your body might be undergoing. This is where the main danger lies.

We spoke with Dr Pankhuri Gautam, Senior Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cocoon Hospital, Jaipur about the importance of knowing what liver disorder can take place during pregnancy. Let’s dive in to find out the warning signs and future steps below.

The Significance Of Liver Health During Pregnancy

The liver is one of the body’s most vital organs. It houses the responsibilities for your body’s metabolism, detoxification, regulation of hormones, and nutrient processing. During pregnancy, its role becomes even more critical because it supports not just the mother’s changing physiology, but also the environment in which the baby is growing.

According to Dr Pankhuri, “When liver function gets disrupted, it can impact everything from digestion and energy levels to blood pressure, clotting, and fatal wellbeing.”

She further adds how this is the reason why liver disorders in pregnancy are never seen as separate issues, rather they are closely associated with the overall safety of your pregnancy itself.

What Are The Liver Disorders Caused During Pregnancy

There are some liver problems which are unique to pregnancy, while others may pre-exist or emerge during this particular period. One such liver disorder is Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. Its symptoms are intense itching, especially on the palms and soles. This condition also requires close monitoring because it may affect the baby if untreated.

Conditions such as preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, and Low Platelets) can also involve the liver and become medical emergencies. Another disorder is acute fatty liver of pregnancy. Though this is rare, it is one of the most serious complications and requires urgent medical care. In addition, viral hepatitis or pre-existing liver disease can further complicate pregnancy outcomes if not managed in a proper way.

Dr Pankhuri’s simple advice to expecting couples is, “Not every symptom is routine, and not every discomfort should be dismissed.”

Warning Signs Of Liver Disorders During Pregnancy You Should Not Ignore

After understanding the various disorders one can suffer through during pregnancy, we asked Dr Pankhuri about the warning signs one should be on the lookout for. Persistent itching without a rash, yellowing of the eyes or skin, severe vomiting, swelling, upper abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, dark urine, or sudden elevation in blood pressure are indicators that require immediate medical attention.

According to Dr Pankhuri, “Pregnancy should never become a phase where serious symptoms are normalised. The earlier these warning signs are investigated with the help of blood tests, liver function tests, and clinical assessment, the better the chances of preventing complications.”
