How Can You Keep Your Fruits Fresh For Longer: Fresh fruits are the way to good health. But do you often find your fruits going bad too quickly? It’s a common problem in many homes, especially when we’re unsure about how to store different types of fruit properly. In this article, we will tell you in detail about a few smart storage tricks that can make a big difference. Here are some easy and effective tips to help your fruits stay fresh, flavourful, and waste-free for much longer:
Not all fruits are meant to be set in the fridge. Some lose their taste and texture when chilled, so you need to be careful.
Keep in the fridge:
i) Berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
ii) Grapes
iii) Apples (after a few days at room temp)
iv) Cherries
v) Kiwi
Keep at room temperature:
i) Bananas
ii) Mangoes
iii) Pineapples
iv) Peaches (until ripe)
v) Citrus fruits (oranges or lime - short term)
Once fruits like peaches, and pears ripen, you can move them to the fridge to extend their life by a few days.
Some fruits produce a natural gas called ethylene as they ripen. This gas can cause other nearby fruits to ripen (and spoil) faster. High ethylene producers include Apples, bananas, avocados, peaches, and pears. Keep these away from sensitive fruits like strawberries or grapes.
For example, don’t store bananas next to strawberries as the strawberries will spoil much quicker.
Avoid storing fruits in sealed plastic bags. Lack of airflow can trap moisture and speed up spoilage. You can opt for:
i) Paper bags (good for ripening)
ii) Mesh produce bags
iii) Ventilated containers or baskets
iv) Reusable silicone pouches for cut fruit

It might be good to wash everything right away, but washing adds moisture, which can cause mould or a bad smell (sometimes). Instead, wait until just before you’re ready to eat or use the fruit. It's generally recommended to wash fruits and vegetables right before you plan to eat them, not when you store them. Washing produce before storage can create a moist environment that encourages bacterial growth and speeds up rotting.

If you have more fruit than you can eat before it starts to brown, try freezing some of it. Just slice or chop the fruit then lay the pieces out on a baking sheet, and freeze them until solid. Once frozen, you can transfer the fruit to a freezer bag. Having frozen fruit on hand is great for making smoothies or adding to baked goods later on.
A few small habits can go a long way in keeping your fruit fresher for longer.
