It has long been maintained that fruits are among the powerful foods for keeping healthy and extending one's life. Recently, a Japanese nutritionist, Michiko Tomioka of Nara, Japan, provided details on five fruits that promote good health and improve the body's immune system. According to a report by CNBC, her choices reinforced the generally-held belief that fruits are key to longevity.

5 Fruits To Boost Immunity and Promote Longevity

From apples to citrus fruits, here are the five fruits one should consume daily for a healthier life.

1. Citrus Fruits (Oranges and Lemons)

While Vitamin C is essential for skin and body health, according to Tomioka, citrus fruits have much more in store than just this vitamin. They also contain a great amount of potassium, fibre, and antioxidants that shield the cells and enhance immunity. She recommends the whole fruit over juice, since juicing removes the important fibre in fruits. What's more, she suggests using the zest, which is full of calcium, thiamine, and folate.

2. Figs

Tomioka further highlights that internally flowered figs, which are often overlooked, happen to be highly beneficial for women's health. Other than being rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals, figs possess an enzyme called ficin, which helps in digestion. They are also useful in maintaining cholesterol and reducing inflammation.

3. Apples

Following international medical and nutrition advice on healthy eating, Tomioka strongly recommends apples due to their superior nutritional content. The fruits are rich in prebiotics, probiotics, polyphenols, fibre, potassium, and Vitamin C. She actually claims that apples have anticancer properties, promote brain health, and enhance immune function. She says the skins should not be removed because of the extra fibre and gut health benefits.

4. Berries

According to Tomioka, berries—like strawberries, blackberries, cranberries, and raspberries—are needed for a strong immune system and are a favourite breakfast food. Blend them into a smoothie or add them to a breakfast bowl; these fruits are low in fat but high in antioxidants, fibre, and vitamins. They also improve both brain and heart health.

5. Persimmons

Native to Japan and China, persimmons are another longevity food. Tomioka explains there are two kinds: an astringent variety that should be eaten when fully ripe, while the non-astringent type is eaten before it softens. Commonly used in Japanese sweets or dried with vegetables, persimmons are high in vitamins A and C, along with potassium, fibre, and polyphenols. They are great for eye and skin health and help control blood pressure and cholesterol.
