Why Women Carry The Mental Load Even When Husbands Help Out In The Kitchen

Many women say that their husbands do help at home, and yet they still feel completely exhausted by the end of the day. The reason is often something that doesn’t show up on any chore chart. Washing the dishes or picking up groceries is only one part of running a home. The bigger part is remembering what needs to be done, planning it, and making sure it actually happens. Dr Chandni Tugnait,  MD (A.M.), psychotherapist, explains how this invisible work still falls almost entirely on women and how they can break away from it.

Why Women Carry The Mental Load Even When Husbands Help Out In The Kitchen?

The mental load is all the thinking that goes on behind the scenes. Women of the house know when the milk will run out tomorrow, or if the child’s school fees are due this Friday, or if the house help is on leave next week is work. Nobody sees all these things, and they revolve around a woman’s mind each day. A woman may or may not be doing every chore herself, but she is usually the one keeping track of all of them.

Why Does Husband's Help Turn Into A Mental Load?

Helping Isn’t Sharing

When a husband says he helps, it often means he steps in when he’s asked to. He’ll go to the market if he’s handed a list, or put the clothes in the machine if someone tells him which setting to use. The task gets done, but noticing what needs doing, deciding how it should be done, and reminding him about it is still left to his wife, which is why she rarely feels that the load has actually been shared.

Giving Instructions Become A Chore

Giving step-by-step directions for every task can be just as tiring as doing the task itself. Many women end up feeling like a manager in their own home, and after a point, it feels easier to just do it themselves than to explain it all over again. Over time, this means even more work for them and a lot of quiet frustration.

Resentment builds slowly

Since the husband feels he is doing his part, he may not understand why his wife still seems unhappy. She, on the other hand, feels unseen and taken for granted. Without an honest conversation, these feelings keep piling up and come out as frequent arguments over things that seem small on the surface.

How to Break the Silence?

The first step is talking about it calmly, at a time when neither person is already irritated. Instead of listing everything he didn’t do, it helps to explain how much planning goes into running the house. Couples can then divide responsibilities fully, so that one person owns a task from start to finish, like handling all the grocery shopping, including checking what’s running low. It also means accepting that he might do things a little differently, and that’s perfectly okay.

Dr Chandni Tugnait,  MD (A.M.), psychotherapist, says, ‘A home runs smoothly when both partners share the thinking as well as the doing. Once the unseen work is finally noticed and divided fairly, women stop feeling like the only adult in charge of the house, and the relationship starts to feel a lot more like a real partnership.’

FAQ
What is mental load in marriage?
It's the invisible thinking behind housework - remembering, planning, tracking, and reminding - not just doing the chore.
Why does a husband's help still feel like extra work?
Because he helps only when asked. The wife still has to notice the task, make a list, and give step-by-step instructions.
How can couples share mental load equally?
Divide tasks with full ownership - one person handles it from start to finish, without reminders, and accept different ways of doing it.
