Signs Your Vaginal pH Balance Is Off and Symptoms Women Shouldn’t Ignore: When it comes to women’s health, conversations usually tend to revolve around fitness, diet, or skin care, while vaginal health is hardly part of mainstream conversations. Vaginal pH is an integral part of a healthy reproductive system and plays a crucial role in overall well-being.
“Maintaining the right vaginal pH is required for comfort, protection, and overall intimate health,” says Dr. Padma Srivastava, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Pune. “An imbalance can make you more prone to a wide range of infections and discomfort.”

We explore why vaginal pH is important, and signs and symptoms to watch out for, of a possible imbalance.
The vagina has its own natural defense system, maintained by good bacteria (lactobacilli) that keep the pH slightly acidic. This is healthy, and the acidity prevents harmful bacteria and yeast from overgrowing. But there are factor that may disrupt the vaginal balance.
“Vaginal balance can get disturbed because of various factors such as infections, antibiotics, hormonal changes, poor hygiene, or the use of harsh products,” explains Dr. Srivastava.
Everyday habits can also play a role. Some of these, that contribute to changing vaginal pH include:
Recognising the signs of vaginal pH imbalance is key, and seeing a doctor soon is important.
Discharge is normal, but a sudden change should raise a red flag. “Women, beware—if there is a sudden change in colour, texture, or amount of discharge, it may signal an imbalance,” noted Dr. Srivastava.
If you smell something weird, be cautious.
“Fishy or an unpleasant smell often indicates bacterial overgrowth, which can mean disturbed vaginal balance,” she added.
Persistent irritation, like itchiness or a burning sensation, around the vagina is another warning sign. Seek medical help immediately.
“Constantly suffering from yeast or bacterial infections can be a sign of a pH imbalance in the vagina,” said Dr. Srivastava.
Changes in vaginal pH can sometimes cause dryness, leading to pain during sex. Seeking help without shame is crucial.
“Understand that the inflammation in the vaginal area may occur when protective bacteria are reduced, and you can experience these concerning signs,” she explains.
Although these symptoms may seem minor, they may not resolve on their own, so ignoring them may not be the best course of action. “If you notice any of these signs, avoid self-medication and visit a gynaecologist for proper diagnosis and treatment,” advised Dr. Srivastava.
Maintaining vaginal pH isn’t just about avoiding infections; it’s about protecting overall intimate health and comfort.
