NES is a type of eating disorder that makes you eat several times in the middle of the night. ven after consuming a large amount of meals throughout the day, you would still feel hungry, and unable to sleep through the night. This issue often makes you crave sweets and foods high in carbohydrates.
To understand this problem in detail and find out its possible treatment options, we reached out to our expert Archana Singhal, Counsellor and Family Therapist, Founder, of Mindwell Counsel, Delhi.
“The precise causes of NES remain unclear; however, various factors contribute to its onset, including stress, anxiety, and depression. For some individuals, nighttime eating may act as a coping strategy to manage emotional distress. Additionally, certain biological factors, such as hormonal imbalances that influence appetite regulation, may play a role,” said Dr Archana.

“Treatment for Night Eating Syndrome typically involves a multifaceted approach. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective therapeutic methods, helping individuals identify and change the thoughts and behaviours associated with their eating patterns. Nutritional counselling can also be beneficial, as it helps establish a balanced eating routine and improves overall dietary habits,” said Dr Archana.
She further added, “Medications may be prescribed in some cases, particularly if underlying issues such as depression or anxiety are present. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have shown promise in reducing NES symptoms for some individuals.”
