We live in a digital age, where young people have easy access to smartphones and almost every type of content. While information available online can often be useful, exposure to fake news or violent content can impact the young mind causing them to take missteps. Having proper sexual awareness for youngsters today cannot be understated. Half of the premature pregnancies and sexual health issues can be avoided if the youth are fully informed.

As we observe International Youth Day on August 12, 2024, it's important to highlight some useful insights on sexual health problems youngsters should be aware of. For that, we reached out to Dr Chirag Bhandari, Founder of the Institute of Andrology and Sexual Health (IASH). He said “Maintaining a fulfilling and healthy sex life is important for your overall well-being. However, several kinds of sexual health challenges can impact an individual’s intimate relationships and quality of life. As a sexual healthcare professional, I believe that knowing these common sexual health issues can help an individual in identifying and treating them at an early stage.”

Erectile Dysfunction

This is one of the most common problems that is found in men. “Erectile dysfunction basically means facing difficulty in achieving or maintaining sufficient erection for sexual activity.
With the rising age of the population, the risk of this issue also rises,” said Dr Chirag. The main reasons behind this problem can be cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, anxiety, and stress.

Painful Sex

There’s a misconception that sex can only be painful for women. In reality, men can experience pain to some degree during sexual intercourse. Dr Chirag said, “The causes may include infections, injuries, certain medical conditions, or psychological factors. When facing this problem, it is best to consult your healthcare professional for the cause and treatment.”

Decreased Sexual Desire

A lack of sexual desire can affect both men and women and may be caused by physical factors, like hormonal imbalances or medications, and psychological factors like; stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship problems.

“Consulting a healthcare professional is the best thing you can do for the right treatment. Relying on irrelevant sources (such as unauthorised articles or DIY treatments suggested by your neighbours) for the treatment can do more harm than good,” said Dr Bhandari.
