Do not use super-absorbent tampons as they are linked with the deadly infection known as toxic shock syndrome, according to nhs.uk. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but life-threatening condition that is caused when bacteria get into the body and release harmful toxins.
To prevent any diseases, make sure you are changing your tampons every six to eight hours. Never go longer than 8 hours with a single tampon in place.

Whenever you insert or remove a tampon, be sure to wash your hands first. Even if you think your hands are clean, you should still wash them to reduce your risk of contracting TSS.
Only use tampons when you have your period. Do not use them at any other time or for any other purpose.

Use a water-based vaginal lubricant on the applicator tip if vaginal dryness makes it difficult to insert a tampon. But avoid using petroleum jelly as a vaginal lubricant, as it can cause vaginal infections.
