When it comes to menstrual hygiene, most women are careful about using clean and safe sanitary products. But one common question that many still overlook is — do sanitary pads expire? We spoke to Dr Mannan Gupta, HOD, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Elantis Healthcare, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi to understand about the same.

Do Sanitary Pads Expire?

Dr Mannan said, Yes, and it’s more important than you might think. He highlighted that sanitary pads, like most hygiene products, come with an expiry date. While it may not always be clearly visible or commonly checked, manufacturers typically recommend using sanitary pads within three to five years from the date of manufacture. This ensures their effectiveness, safety, and comfort.

Why Do Sanitary Pads Expire?

According to Dr Mannan, sanitary pads are made of absorbent materials, often containing polymers, adhesives, and sometimes even fragrances. Over time, these components can break down, degrade, or become contaminated if not stored properly.

Why Expired Sanitary Pads Should Be Avoided?

Here are a few reasons why expired pads should be avoided:

Reduced Absorbency: The absorbent gel or cotton inside may lose its effectiveness, leading to leakage.

Skin Irritation: Degraded materials, especially adhesives or fragrance elements, can cause rashes, allergies, or discomfort.

Bacterial Growth: If stored in humid or dusty environments, pads can become a breeding ground for bacteria or mold.

Loss of Sterility: Sanitary pads are manufactured in sterile conditions. Over time, especially if the packaging is compromised, they can lose their sterility.

How To Check For Expiry?

Dr Mannan highlighted that most sanitary pad packages carry a “manufacturing date” or “expiry date” printed on the side or back. If it’s not listed clearly, a general rule is to discard pads after 3 years of purchase — especially if the packaging has been damaged or exposed to moisture.
