Have you felt persistent joint discomfort and swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet? Or, a consistent fatigue that just refuses to go despite having ample rest? You might be suffering from hyperuricemia or high uric acid levels. For women, high uric acid levels can impact their menstrual cycles, notes Dr Praanjal Gupta, consultant, Urology & Centre for Excellence in Prostate & Urological Cancers, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Noida. He tells more.

Does High Uric Acid Levels Impact Your Hormones?

Uric acid is a waste product that should normally be eliminated in the urine, failing which you may develop conditions like kidney stones and gout.Dr Praanjal Gupta states that there's a connection between your uric acid levels and hormones and this exists in both genders.

In females, a study published in the National Library of Medicine says that the variations in uric acid levels during the menstrual cycle were evaluated. The oestrogen levels increased with decreased uric acid levels only when observed persistently. The progesterone levels also show a rise with decreased levels of uric acid.

The Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is positively associated with uric acid, i.e., increased FSH is observed with increased uric acid. No correlation observed between Luteinising hormone and uric acid. Despite the evidence available, more research is needed to find the actual correlation between uric acid and sex hormones in both males and females.

High Uric Acid Levels Impact Male Hormones, Too

As for males, a study published by the National Library of Medicine stated that there is a significant association between serum uric acid levels and total testosterone (TT), which is the steroid sex hormone responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics.

Testosterone is produced by testicular interstitial cells in males as well as the reticular cortex of the adrenal glands. The correlation found says that when the serum uric acid levels increased, then testosterone levels decreased, and vice versa.

This correlation was particularly evident in males with type 2 diabetes. In the same study, it was found that elderly individuals who have an advanced stage of type-2 diabetes and increased uric acid levels have lower levels of Luteinising and follicle-stimulating hormones produced by the anterior pituitary gland.

5 Dietary Considerations To Control Uric Acid Levels

  1. Low purine diets: Purine, when broken down by the body, produces uric acid as a by-product. These diets reduce uric acid levels.
  2. Say no to alcohol: It prevents the kidneys from eliminating uric acid from the body.
  3. Avoid Sugary Drinks and sweets: Table sugar breaks down into uric acid.
  4. Stay Hydrated: Drink enough water to keep the body functional.
  5. Consume lean proteins: Lean meat and poultry instead of organ and red meat, legumes, and low-fat dairy could be sources of protein.

Medicines and Preventive Steps For Uric Acid Levels

Medicines like Allopurinol and Febuxostat prevent excess production. Probenecid can also help by facilitating the excretion of uric acid by the kidneys.

Preventive Steps

  • Stay Hydrated
  • Maintain a healthy and balanced diet
  • Maintain weight by regularly engaging in physical activities.
