We all enjoy travelling through mountainous trails and sandy beaches. The feeling of being in another country or city where we discover new cultures and traditions, meet with locals, and go sightseeing, is heavenly. However, it is also essential to care for your dental health while wandering in a new place and living the time of your life.
To know more about oral hygiene and how to maintain it during travelling, we spoke to Dr Kamlesh Kothari, Dental Implant Specialist, Cosmetic Dentist, Maxillofacial Surgeon, and Founder and Clinical Director of Aesthetica, Kolkata. He shared some effective tips for you to follow.
Dental Hygiene Tips While Travelling
Fundamental Oral Care Products
While packing your goods, remember to keep a travel-sized toothbrush, tongue cleaner, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash from a trustworthy brand in your toiletries bag. “These essentials ensure that your oral hygiene remains uncompromised, no matter how far from home you roam. Keep your dentist's contact details for emergency advice,” says Dr Kothari.
Master the Brushing Routine
No matter where you are, ensure brushing for a solid two minutes, twice a day, to avoid cavities. Using an electric travel toothbrush can help in more convenient and thorough cleaning.
Use Quality Water
However far from home you are, never compromise on the water quality you consume for good dental hygiene. Dr Kothari advises, “Choose bottled or filtered water instead of risking the unknowns of tap water to avoid potential contaminants that could harm your teeth and overall health.”

Snack Smarter
Travelling can enhance your hunger making you crave sweet snacks (Healthy Low-Calorie Snacks). Choose healthier alternatives like nuts, cheese, or crunchy veggies instead. “Sugar-free gum is also a great option; it not only satisfies your sweet tooth but also helps keep your teeth clean by boosting saliva production, which neutralizes acid,” says Dr Kothari.
Pre And Post-Trip Dental Checkup
Before starting your journey and after reaching home, make sure to visit your dentist for a thorough check-up. Dr Kothari advises, “Addressing any potential issues beforehand can save you from dealing with dental emergencies later. Through post-travel check-ups, your dentist can catch any issues that might have developed during your travels and keep your smile healthy and bright.”
Our teeth are our treasure, therefore, keep them healthy and clean for enhanced oral hygiene. Visit your dentist for a personalised toothcare routine.
