Cosmetic chemicals are designed to enhance our appearance and boost our confidence, but research strongly suggests that some of these ingredients may increase the risk of cancer. Since personal care items contain a variety of chemicals, pinpointing a direct cause-and-effect relationship for any specific one is challenging. The connection between cosmetic products and an elevated cancer risk has sparked significant debate.
To gain further insight into whether cosmetics are linked to breast cancer, we consulted with Dr Chanchal Gupta, Senior Consultant and HOD – Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Yatharth Hospital, Faridabad.
Dr Chanchal Gupta explained that several potential causes of breast cancer include genetic predisposition, long-term hormonal replacement therapy, alcohol consumption, environmental pollution, and aspects of modern lifestyle. She said, “Some studies that have produced controversial findings indicate that certain everyday products, including some cosmetic ingredients, might be associated with breast cancer.”
For instance, substances like ethylene oxide have recently been classified as concerning. Additionally, chemicals such as parabens and xenoestrogens mimic oestrogen or disrupt the body’s natural oestrogen metabolism, acting as carcinogens because of their oestrogen-like effects. Although the evidence is inconclusive, women may want to consider removing these ingredients as a precaution.

Dr Chanchal said, “Absolutely, products used on sensitive skin areas like the underarms and chest can be absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream. This is especially true for items such as deodorants and breast creams, which are often applied to these delicate regions.”
To reduce the risk of exposure to harmful chemicals, it’s wise to be mindful of the ingredients in these products and consider limiting their use. Additionally, opting for natural or organic alternatives may provide a safer option for maintaining personal care without compromising health.
Dr Chanchal advises that prolonged use of products containing harmful chemicals may pose significant health risks. Women should exercise caution when using items that include endocrine disruptors, synthetic fragrances, and specific preservatives, as these ingredients can negatively affect hormonal balance and overall well-being.
Choosing cleaner and safer alternatives is a proactive approach to minimising potential health hazards. Additionally, being informed about the ingredients in personal care products and opting for those that are free from toxic substances can empower women to make healthier choices. This not only benefits individual health but also promotes a more sustainable lifestyle by supporting brands that prioritise safety and environmental responsibility.
