From Instagram grids to college canteens, bubble tea has gone from niche novelty to global staple. Yet, despite its growing popularity, questions remain, what exactly is bubble tea, how is it made, is it healthy, and how often can one really drink it?
This article byDhruv Kohli, Founder, Boba Bhai, explores all of that simply, clearly, and with a nod to why bubble tea continues to be more than just a passing trend.
What is Bubble Tea, Really?
Originally from Taiwan, bubble tea, also called boba, is a beverage made with milk, chewy tapioca pearls, and brewed tea (usually black or green). Over the years, it has become quite an adaptable beverage, with a wide range of flavours, garnishes, and textures available, from plant based varieties to fruity teas and iced lattes, and includes toppings like flavouring jellies and popping boba.
Tapioca pearls are piping soft, chewy balls made from cassava starch at the centre of the drink. They give bubble tea its unique texture and are naturally gluten-free and mildly sweet.
What started out as a local street drink has now spread throughout the world and is becoming more and more popular in India, especially among GenZ. The younger generation, who have an inclination towards personalisation and self-expression, view bubble tea as more of a statement than as a drink.

Is Bubble Tea a Healthy Choice?
Bubble tea may offer some health benefits, depending on how it is made. The tea base has a good amount of antioxidants (especially black or green tea), and tapioca pearls are a carbohydrate that is easy to digest to start and provides a quick boost of energy. Furthermore, they are naturally allergen-free and gluten-free.
The real question is sugar. The sugar content of bubble tea can vary widely, which is where the personalisation comes in. Most outlets now allow the customer to pick everything from the sugar level, type of milk, and even portion size and toppings!
How Is Bubble Tea Made?
Making bubble tea is part technique, part creativity. The tapioca pearls are first boiled until soft and chewy, then rinsed in cold water. Separately, the tea is brewed and chilled. To assemble, tapioca pearls are added to a glass, followed by the tea and milk (or juice, depending on the flavour). It’s then sweetened with sugar or syrup, topped with ice, and served in a wide-mouthed cup with a thick straw so you can enjoy the pearls with every sip.
From fruity mixes to creamy concoctions, no two cups need to be the same and that’s part of its enduring charm.
How Often Can You Have Bubble Tea?
While some have made bubble tea a weekly or even daily ritual, others only occasionally indulge in it as a treat. Just like coffee or desserts,it all comes down to personal preference and moderation.
The special part about bubble tea is its ability to adjust to your current state of mind and emotions. You can always alter it to your preference. Whether you're looking for something light and refreshing, or you're fancying something rich and creamy, there's always a way to make it the way you want.
Where Does Bubble Tea Stand Going Forward
What began as a local street drink has transformed into a cultural reference point. Bubble tea is now deeply embedded in everyday life across countries, from social meetups to celebratory experiences. The aesthetic qualities of bubble tea, the customizable, DIY ordering experience, and its unique flavor profiles make it particularly appealing to younger audiences who view it as a lifestyle, not solely a drink.
New trends continue to emerge; the next wave of bubble tea will be defined by seasonal specials, plant-based milks, fruit-based infusions, and edible jelly add-ins. Today, bubble tea is more of a global mood than a beverage, and its popularity is because of its ability to adapt to shifting tastes.
