Junk food has become a major part of our and our kid’s diets these days. As an adult, we can still control ourselves from eating junk. But keeping kids away from junk is a challenge. We spoke to Chhavi Rohilla, Founder of NutriIndulgence for her views on the same. Read on to learn how you can keep your child away from junk by making careful diet choices.
Nutrients are important for the kids and thus the first thing to do is to offer nutrient-dense food rather than an empty calorie source such as sugary items. You can include whole, nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and dairy products. These food items will keep your child full and satisfied and they won’t ask for unnecessary junk.
Magnesium-rich food regulates blood sugar levels and reduces the cravings for junk. Thus, you are advised to include magnesium-rich food like leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, swiss chard, nuts, seeds like almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Omega-3 increases feelings of fullness and ensures satisfaction after meals and thus your kid's desire for unhealthy snacks will reduce.
You can engage your kids in meal planning and preparation so that they develop a habit of picking healthy options and appreciate healthy food. Let them choose vegetables and fruits from the grocery store and involve them in the simple cooking process.
