Recently, viral sensation Orry, aka Orhan Awatramani, disclosed that he lost 23 kg following a strict zero-sugar-tolerant diet. In a podcast hosted by Malaika Arora and Arbaaz Khan's son Arhaan Khan, Orry said he went from 73 to around 50kg, thanks to the regime. So, what is a zero-sugar-tolerant diet? Dietitian Silver Sethi, attached to SCI Hospital & Six Sigma Clinics, shares her insights.
According to Ms. Sethi, a zero-sugar-tolerant diet has gained importance in recent times. It involves eliminating the consumption of added sugar such as:
"The main aim is weight loss and health management. Added advantages of following a zero-sugar-tolerant diet are controlled sugar spikes, especially for individuals suffering from Type 2 diabetes as it helps in managing insulin resistance and balancing blood sugar levels," adds the dietitian.
Apart from the aforementioned, the diet "indirectly benefits cardiovascular health, helps in hypertension control, cholesterol management, and obesity control," Ms. Sethi says.

According to Ms. Sethi, a zero-sugar-tolerant diet does not entail only removing added sugars. It also covers "restriction of natural sugars through fresh fruits, starchy vegetables and carbohydrates which have a high glycemic index and lead to easy sugar spikes," she says.

"The focus is to cut off added sugar, limit natural sugars and increase wholesome foods and denser micronutrient intake by including a variety of vegetables, fibre rich complex carbohydrates like pulses and millets along with a balanced intake of good quality lean proteins and limited fats," Ms. Sethi suggests.
Despite all its positives, zero-sugar-tolerant diet has its drawbacks, warns Ms. Sethi. They are the following:
1) Nutrient deficiency: If it is not drafted and monitored under expert supervision and, if followed for a long time, one can develop major nutrient deficiencies. Organ health can also be affected.
2) Blood sugar/pressure drop: It can lead to severe blood sugar drop and low blood pressure/hypotension, which can be risky.
3) Impact meal planning: Complete removal of sugary foods can complicate meal planning and execution. It can affect one’s dining experience, leading to an unhealthy relationship with food.
4) Result in stress/binge eating: Extreme restrictions do provoke cravings and often lead to stress eating and binge eating, uncontrollable food indulgences, and episodes, resulting in psychological concerns too.
"If you wish to try out the zero-sugar-tolerant diet, make sure you assess these pros and cons before starting. If you do start, please follow it under expert guidance," she wraps up.
