National Junk Food Day is just around the corner. While many people dedicate this day to cheat eating and bingeing on their favourite junk food, we are here to tell you why you should refrain from junk food completely.
We talked to Maya Pereira Sawant, a personal trainer, metabolic nutritionist, and founder of Lean Kitchen By Maya, and asked her to share a few reasons why one must avoid having junk food.
Junk Foods Make You Gain Weight
All those on a weight loss journey would agree that it isn't an easy route and there is a lot you have to sacrifice in the process, including your favourite foods which are usually high in calories.
The expert shared that eating ultra-processed food every day will make you gain weight. She also shared that according to a study that compared body weight changes and calorie consumption for 10 men and 10 women who ate either ultra-processed or minimally processed food for two weeks. As per the study, she shared that those who ate a highly-processed diet gained more weight due to the calorie intake.
Junk Food Is Addictive
It is a popular saying that addiction to anything is harmful. Junk food is more like an addiction. The expert shared that according to a lot of studies, eating junk food can trigger some parts of the brain like drugs do and hijack the dopamine system of the brain which is linked to feelings of reward and pleasure. She further shared that this is the reason we crave junk food more and more.
The expert cited the example of chocolate manufacturers who use the right combination of fats, sugar, and salt to maximise the dopamine effect. She also shared that some medicines which are used for treating health problems like Parkinson’s disease are also created in a way to increase dopamine levels because, with age, there is a huge effect on our appetite.
