However, many people often find themselves confused about the distinctions between these words. While they may seem similar, each term carries its unique connotation. To clear up the confusion and provide a better understanding, we spoke with Dr Geeta Shroff, Director of NuBella Center for Women’s Health in New Delhi. Dr Shroff explained that ‘thin’ typically refers to a body with little fat, and it carries a neutral or factual connotation. ‘Slim,’ on the other hand, suggests a lean, well-proportioned figure, often viewed positively.

However, 'skinny’ is used to describe someone who is very thin to the point where it may be considered excessive or unhealthy, sometimes indicating weakness or lack of vitality. Dr Shroff said, “While ‘slim’ is often seen as an ideal of health, ‘thin’ is neutral, and ‘skinny’ may raise concerns about being underweight.”

Are These Terms Subjective Or Based On Measurable Factors Like BMI Or Body Composition?

Terms like ‘thin,’ ‘slim,’ and ‘skinny’ are highly subjective, often influenced by cultural, societal, and personal perceptions, rather than measurable factors like BMI or body composition.

Dr Shroff said, “While BMI offers a standardised way to classify weight, it doesn’t account for important factors like body proportions, muscle mass, or individual health, which vary significantly from person to person. These terms typically reflect societal ideals of beauty, which can change over time and across cultures.”

For example, what is considered ‘slim’ in one culture may be viewed as ‘skinny’ or ‘average’ in another, highlighting how these descriptors are not purely based on physical measurements.

Additionally, they often overlook the complexity of health, as a person may be classified as 'skinny’ but may not be healthy, while someone ‘thin’ may be very fit and strong. Ultimately, these terms speak more to how a person’s body fits into current beauty standards than to their actual health or physical condition.

Dr Shroff explained that the goal of staying fit to remain slim and healthy revolves around balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and sustainable habits that enhance strength, flexibility, and overall well-being. This approach combines strength training and cardio to tone muscles and achieve the ideal body composition.

In contrast, the goal of losing weight to become ‘thin’ often requires creating a calorie deficit and focusing on fat reduction, with diet and exercise being closely monitored throughout the process.
