Maintaining vaginal health is very important to avoid any risk of infections. The best part is that you don't need to buy extra items or take special care of your vagina for this. This is due to the fact that the vagina has its own mechanism for maintaining its acidic pH. This way, it protects against all infections. However, several of our daily activities could hinder this process.

Dr. Ila Jalote, consultant obstetrics and gynecologist at Manipal Hospital, tells us about five things many women do on a regular basis that could harm their vagina.

1. Using Soap Inside The Vagina

Don't use soap, shampoo, or feminine hygiene products inside your vagina. This is because these products contain chemicals that can disturb the pH of the vagina. This can result in vaginal infection.

2. Using Scented Products

Do not use scented products or deodorants in your vagina. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ and scented products have chemicals that can irritate the vagina. Your vagina is not supposed to smell of roses.

3. Douching

Douching is a method of cleaning the vagina by injecting water into it. Many women regularly practice douching. Some do it after intercourse to prevent pregnancy, while others simply because they believe that it will clean better. But this should be avoided because douching cannot prevent pregnancy but it can definitely disturb the vaginal pH and kill all the good bacteria.  The ideal way to clean the vagina is simply by using clean water.

4. Not Being Careful With Hair Removal Cream

It is entirely up to you whether you want to remove hair from your pubic area or not.

To remove the hair down there, you can use hair removal creams as long as you are not allergic to them. However, be careful not to apply it inside the vagina, only stick to the outer area. Otherwise, it will burn you down there instantly.

5. Not Changing Pads Frequently Enough During Periods

To reduce the risks of infections during periods, change your pads frequently. Ideally, you should change your pads every 4 to 5 hours, and at least 2-3 times throughout the day.

Why Do You Have To Maintain Vaginal Health?

If you don't maintain vaginal health, it can cause a bacterial infection that can lead to abnormal vaginal discharge. This can result in a foul odor and itching. Prolonged bacterial infections can also result in diseases. If left untreated, it can affect a woman's fertility. For all these reasons, you must maintain your vaginal health.
