Headaches can come uninvited, during work, before bed, or when you’re trying to enjoy some peace. I’ve always relied on balms or painkillers until someone recommended clove oil. Intrigued, I gave it a try by applying clove oil behind my ears, which apparently works for many. Here’s what I learnt about it and whether it actually helped me.
What Is Clove Oil?
Clove oil is an essential oil extracted from dried flower buds of the clove plant. It has a strong, spicy scent and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine. Most of its power comes from a compound called eugenol.
Key Benefits Of Clove Oil
- Natural pain relief: Eugenol has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties that may help reduce discomfort.
- Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce swelling and tension in muscles or nerves.
- Antiseptic: Can kill germs and bacteria, often used in dental care.
- Aromatherapy use: The scent is known to ease stress and create a calming effect.

Side Effects Of Clove Oil
While clove oil can be powerful, it’s also quite strong. Here are some things to be careful about:
- Skin irritation: Applying it directly without diluting may cause burning or rashes.
- Allergic reactions: Some people may be sensitive to eugenol.
- Not for kids or pets: It’s not recommended for babies, small children, or pets.
- Always do a patch test before applying clove oil topically.
Does Applying Clove Oil Behind Ears Really Help With Headaches?
I was sceptical at first, but here’s what I did, I diluted a drop of clove oil with coconut oil and gently rubbed it behind my ears and at the base of my neck. The warmth and strong aroma did offer some relief, especially when I also started deep breathing along with it.
It didn’t completely eliminate the headache, but it definitely reduced the intensity. I also felt more relaxed, which helped manage the pain. That said, this method might not work for all types of headaches, especially migraines or hormonal ones.
