Serena Williams retirement

Serena Williams, one of the greatest tennis players of all time and a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, has announced that she is retiring from professional tennis, indicating she could step away after the upcoming US Open.

In a column for Vogue, the 40-year-old Williams described her intention to finish her pro career as an “evolution” away from tennis. “I have never liked the word retirement,” she wrote. She also added “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution,” she said. “I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.” But the emotion is not lost on Williams, either. “I am more grateful for you than I can ever express in words. You have carried me to so many wins and so many trophies,” she said. “I’m going to miss that version of me, that girl who played tennis. And I’m going to miss you.”

She said she will retire after the U.S. Open, which will commence from late August into September. A victory there would tie her with Margaret Court’s Grand Slam record.

“I never wanted to have to choose between tennis (Sania Mirza Announces Retirement From Tennis, Know All About The Star Player) and a family. I don’t think it’s fair,” Williams wrote. “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labour of expanding our family.”

Williams focused on her family in the announcement, writing that her nearly five-year-old daughter wants to be an older sister. Williams is married to Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian.

“I have to focus on being a mom (5 Gifting Ideas For Mother’s Day That’ll Make Every Mom Feel Special), my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks,” Williams wrote in an Instagram post Tuesday.
