We sleep on it everyday, some of us spend our entire day either sitting on it while working or simply chilling. A mattress often gets less attention, but it is the maker or breaker of your sleep and spine and even skin to an extent. If it is infested with dust and bacteria, you tend to have allergies and it is a sign of your hygiene level too. So here are some tips that will help you in cleaning them thoroughly.
Step 1: Gather These Material
- Laundry detergent
- Baking soda
- Cold water
- Cleaning cloth
- Dish soap
- Vacuum cleaner
Step 2: Washing Sheets
Take off all the bedding and put them in your washing machine for a wash while you clean your mattress. Use hot water as that helps in killing dust mites.
Step 3: Vacumming
Vacuum clean the entire mattress and pay close attention to the seams to catch all that hiddent dirt.
Step 4: Stain Removal
After vacumming, it is time to clean the stains. No water or solution must be applied here directly. If you have a mattress with memory foam, then you will be in a soup. Now when it comes to selecting your stain remover, you must see realise the purpose. In case it is a biological stain get an enzyme cleaner. Take a clean cloth and spray the solution on it and blot the stain area. Next, take some cold water on a different clean cloth and blot the stain until the stain lifts. We must use as little product and moisture as possible. This works best on stains of blood, vomit, urine, sweat, and other related stains.
You can also make your own solution by infusing water with dish soap or cold water with hydrogen peroxide. Apply just the foam to the stain.
Step 5: Sprinkle Baking Soda
Not everyone has access to a strong sun and fresh air all the time so the best way is to use baking soda. Take your mattress and sprinkle a layer of baking soda all over it. Let it breathe for a few hours or overnight. During this time, baking soda will break down acid and the mattress will be free of moisture or odour. Make sure you open your windows in the room so that the light can flow in. It is the UV rays which help kill the bacteria.
Step 6: Second Vacumm
Now that the baking soda has done its job, you must vcuum it well.
Step 7: Flipping
Do the entire process for the flip side of the mattress and this should be done at regular intervals. This must become a thumb rule whether you deep clean it or not. This should be ideally done every three monthsin case you have a spring mattresses as they compress over time. But if any higher quality, check with manufacturer.
Step 8: Protection
Once dry, cover your well cleaned mattress with a mattress protector. Ths way you will guard it from dirt, spills etc.
Have a heart and do justice to your body. If you are having sleep issues, your back aches when you wake up or have rashes in the morning then it is time for a mattress clean up or even change.
