Velvet is the fabric of royalty. A velvet saree is a rich experience of an aesthetic draped to delicately stage itself as a whisper of bygone glamour. However, with such an indulgence comes a very important rule—velvet is delicate, and preserving it is an art.

Before engaging in any cleaning ritual, the first step is to understand the fibre composition of your velvet fabric. It is increasingly rare to find modern velvet that is solely silk; it more often consists of synthetic fibres, rayon, or cotton (velveteen).

The hard-and-fast rule to keep in mind is that any heavily embellished saree, with zari work or traditional silk velvet, has only one option and that is professional dry cleaning.

Water exposure can cause shrinkage, permanent crushing of the pile, and damage the intricate metal threads. The careful exception is that plain velvet that is synthetic or polyester-based may be washed by hand gently if and only if the care label permits. If in doubt, always have it dry cleaned.

The Cleaning RItual

If you think your velvet saree can benefit from an at-home wash, please follow these strict procedures. Don’t even think about the machine; your hands are the softest, gentlest tools for gentle hand washing.

Use only cold or lukewarm water, plus a high-quality mild, pH-neutral fabric detergent for delicate fabrics. Hot water is velvet’s mortal enemy; it will shrink the fabric and ruin the elasticity of the weave.

For washing, use only your hands to swish your saree gently through the soapy water five or six times. Never scrub, twist, or wring—which stretches the weave and crushes the pile, leading to bald spots which cannot be repaired. When finished washing, rinse thoroughly and clean all detergent residue in cool, clean water.

For all of your spot treatment for spills, remember to be quick, but gentle. For spills, blot immediately with a clean, dry microfibre cloth; never rub. For grease or minor stains, form a gentle paste using equal parts baking soda and lemon juice, diluted with water. Apply the paste gently with your finger, dab (as opposed to rub) with a microfibre cloth, and rinse with cold water.

Drying & De-Wrinkling Process

If you want to ruin the velvet's texture in the blink of an eye, dry it incorrectly. For the air-dry method, apply gentle pressure to squeeze out excess water. Do not hang a wet, heavy velvet saree, especially if it is wet. The weight will cause the fabric and pile to stretch and distort permanently.

Instead, apply the flat lay method: Lay the saree flat on a clean, absorbent towel (or a mesh rack) in a cool shaded location. Do not lay it in the sun as sunlight will cause fading.

As for de-wrinkling, heed the steamer and avoid using an iron like the plague. Ironing will subject the fabric (especially the pile) to direct heat and pressure, crushing the pile permanently. Use a handheld garment steamer to remove wrinkles and restore the crushed pile, while holding the steamer a few inches away and allowing the steam to do the work, and lightly brush the fabric with a soft clothes brush to lift the nap.

How To Store Your Velvet Saree The Right Way

Preservation is simply a long-term storage method. As a rule, do not store velvet in plastic bags because they trap moisture, which can lead to mildew growth. Rather, wrap the saree completely in a breathable muslin cloth or a cotton saree bag.

Muslin protects the fabric from dust but is breathable, while cotton is breathable but does not prevent dust. Don't hang velvet for long periods of time because it can stretch and leave shoulder pad marks.

If you must fold the saree, place acid-free tissue paper between folds and remember to change the fold lines every few months so you do not create a permanent crease; this is the roll or gentle fold method. For pest prevention, use natural repellents such as dried neem leaves (again, in a small cotton sachet and away from direct contact with the fabrics) instead of harsh naphthalene balls; this is the aromatic alternative.
