Govardhan Puja Date 2025: Spiritual Significance

Govardhan Puja celebrates the day Lord Krishna defeated the ego of Indra, the God of Rain, and established the importance of nature and devotion.

The Legend: According to the Bhagavata Purana, the villagers of Vrindavan used to worship Lord Indra for rain and a good harvest. Lord Krishna, still a young boy, convinced them that they should worship Govardhan Hill instead, as it was the hill and the environment that truly sustained their cattle and provided their livelihood.

The Divine Act: Angered by this shift in devotion, Indra unleashed a devastating storm of torrential rain upon Vrindavan. To protect his devotees and their cattle, Lord Krishna lifted the majestic Govardhan Hill onto his little finger, holding it up for seven continuous days and nights until Indra realised his mistake and bowed down to Krishna's supremacy.

Significance: The festival symbolises the victory of humility and true devotion over ego. It also reinforces the Vedic message of reverence for nature, cows (Gau Mata), and the environment that sustains life.
