The festival of Govardhan Puja commemorates the time when Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Braj from the wrath of Indra, who was angered by their neglect of his worship. By offering Annakut Bhog, devotees express their gratitude to Lord Krishna for his protection and the blessings of nature.
Annakut literally means "mountain of food," representing an abundance of offerings made to the deity. It signifies the importance of sharing and community, where families come together to prepare various dishes to honour Krishna. This practice also serves as a reminder of the connection between spiritual and physical nourishment. By participating in this ritual, devotees seek blessings for prosperity and the removal of obstacles in their lives. The act of offering food symbolises the selfless act of sharing with others, reflecting the core values of love and devotion in Hindu philosophy.

Govardhan Puja 2024 Bhog Items To Offer Lord Krishna
When preparing Bhog for Govardhan Puja, it's essential to include these traditional Bhog items to Lord Krishna:
- Butter And Sugar Or Makhan Mishri: It is believed that this offering brings happiness and contentment to the devotee.
- Kadhi Chawal: You can offer Kadhi Chawal as it is thought to bring auspicious results and please Lord Krishna.
- Annakut: Prepare a mountain of various grains, fruits, and vegetables shaped like the Govardhan Hill. This symbolises abundance and gratitude for the earth’s gifts for the time when Lord Krishna protected all the villagers of Braj by taking shelter under Govardhan Hill.
- Sweets: You can offer an array of sweets like kheer, rasgulla, and jalebi.
- Laddoos And Barfis: Make sure the Bhog includes jeera laddoos, cashews and pistachio barfis, which are considered auspicious for fulfilling wishes.
- Panchamrit: This is a sacred mixture of five ingredients (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar) that should be offered to purify the heart and soul.
- Other Snacks: You can also add items like shakkar para and mathri in the Bhog.
