Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Badhaai Do's trailer is getting immense love ever since its release. Directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, this one was one of the much-awaited releases.

If you missed watching the trailer, let's quickly tell you that Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar's film promises you a dose of laughter as it challenges societal norms. The trailer revolves around Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar's marriage and their one big secret - homosexuality. Their marriage isn't a regular one, it is a that of convenience, and post-wedding they continue to live as roommates.

For me, what makes this one a must-watch is that revolves around the concept of lavender marriage. Lately, Bollywood has been giving us many stories around the LGBTQ+ community. However, there has been no film out-and-out around lavender marriage. Earlier, it was only Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion that touched this topic subtly.

What Is Lavender Marriage?

Lavender marriage is used to describe a male-female marriage where one or both partners are homosexual or bisexual. It is also known as mixed-orientation marriage. In this case, the male-female get married to hide their sexual preferences because of society taboos and family pressure.

The term lavender marriage was first used during the early 12th century to hide homosexuality of some public celebrities before World War 2. This was the time when the taboos made it impossible for homosexuals to pursue a public career, especially in the Hollywood film industry. Reportedly, many homosexuals today are also married to a straight spouse for reputation.

Badhaai Do depicts lavender marriage which is undertaken by two individuals due to family pressure.

This isn't Bhumi Pednekar's first film that is socially relevant. Earlier, the actor starred in movies like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, Shubh Mangal Saavdhaan, Bala which send out hard-hitting social messages.

It will indeed be interesting to see if the family ends up accepting Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar for who they are irrespective of the social conditioning. Badhaai Do is slated for a theatrical release on 11th February 2022.
