The novel coronavirus is spreading across the world like a wildfire. Several government and organizations across the world are taking necessary precautions to prevent it from spreading. And the only way to stop it is to stay indoors and isolate yourselves from the outside world. For the unversed, the total number of COVID-19 cases in India is apparently around 496 and 10 people have lost their lives. In the wake of the rapid spread of novel coronavirus, last night, PM Narendra Modi declared entire nation lockdown till April 14, 2020.

Keeping this in mind, most of us have stocked up veggies. But vegetables and fruits don’t have a longer shelf life and can go bad in 3-4 days only. So, what we can do? Is there any solution available? What you can prepare for the rest of the days? Well, you can prepare dishes with your dal. Yes, you read it right. It is believed that wholesome sprouts and legumes have a longer shelf life and stay fresh for around 4-5 months. So, here are some dishes that you can prepare with dal amid coronavirus outbreak. 

Chana Dal Parantha

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp ghee
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 pinches turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp paneer masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 cup chana dal, boiled
  • 1/4 tsp thymol seeds
  • Salt as required
  • Water as required

Directions

  1. To prepare these delicious parathas, start with mashing boiled dal and transfer it in a bowl.
  2. Now, in a large bowl, mix wholewheat flour with salt, cumin seeds, paneer masala, red chilli powder, turmeric, thymol seeds, mashed chana dal and ghee. Add enough water and knead a soft dough.
  3. Now, divide the dough into small sized round balls and roll them into parathas, using a rolling pin. 
  4. Heat Tawa on medium flame and place a paratha on it and spread ghee on top. Cook until it is golden brown on both sides. 
  5. Once done, transfer the cooked paratha onto a plate and serve hot with pickle or mint chutney.

Moong Dal Chilla

Ingredients

  • 1 cup soaked green moong dal
  • 1/4 tbsp green chilli paste
  • Salt as required
  • 1/2 tbsp cumin powder
  • 1/4 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp virgin olive oil

Directions

  1. Soak dal for around 5 to 6 hours or overnight. When it's soaked properly, drain the excess water and grind dal in a processor until you get a thick and non-lumpy mixture.
  2. Add rest of the ingredients and mix well.
  3. Heat oil in a non-stick pan on a medium-low flame. Spread the batter evenly on the pan, using a spatula or a spoon. 
  4. Cook from both sides and then serve with green chutney or tomato sauce.

Urad Dal Laddoo

Ingredients

  • 150 gm urad dal
  • 1/2 tbsp cardamom powder
  • 140 gm sugar
  • 10 ml ghee
  • 150 gm powdered jaggery
  • Water as required
  • Grated coconut to garnish

Directions

  1. Soak urad dal for about 5 hours. When it's soaked properly, drain the excess water and keep it aside.
  2. Heat ghee in a pan over medium flame. Once it is hot enough, add soaked dal and fry it for a couple of minutes. 
  3. In a separate pan, heat sugar and jaggery until you get two-string consistency. 
  4. Add fried urad dal to this syrup along with cardamom powder. Mix well.
  5. Grease your palms with a little ghee and make small laddoos of the mixture. Garnish these laddoos with grated coconut and your laddoos are ready!
