Money And Mental Health

Money plays a significant role in our lives, but our relationship with it goes beyond earning, spending and saving. It can influence our self-esteem, emotional well-being and how we perceive our future. Financial concerns can affect our peace of mind, relationships and everyday happiness. On World Mental Health Day 2026, Archana Singh, Counsellor and Family Therapist, and founder of Mindwell Counsel, explains how financial stress can affect emotional health and why developing a healthier relationship with money matters.

How Financial Constraints Affect Mental Health

When people find themselves in financial constraints, payment or savings or unstable income sources they are bound to feel stress all the time. Sometimes this stress can become chronic. When they make an effort to have fun, they might have thoughts about money management. This can be about, ‘How much am I spending?’ or ‘Am I carrying enough money today?’. It can affect sleep, attention, temper and patience over the years and is a concern. A person may be anxious or irritated and not realise that he has money related stress as one of the reasons.

The Psychology Behind Our Relationship With Money

But our experiences influence our relationship with money, too. A family member who doesn't have a lot of confidence about money may not have a lot of confidence even when they do have money. Some may be guilty of putting money toward themselves at any time. Similarly, some try to get lottery tickets when they feel financially depressed. The whole idea of winning a lottery ticket in itself is stressful. This break, however, may not be lasting and can lead to unnecessary additional expenses down the road which can add to stress.

How Money Can Affect Our Relationships

Money has the potential to impact relationships as well. Money can be an issue when it comes to a disagreement between partners. This isn't just a money issue though. Sometimes they go hand-in-hand with insecurity, a sense of responsibility or a lack of understanding. Talking about money without badgering them about any blame can be helpful to encourage trust and reduce confusion.

Building Healthier Relationship With Money For Better Mental Well-Being

One of the other big issues these days is making comparisons. People can be seen having lavish vacations, shopping for new items, socialising with what appears to be a flawless life on social media. We can become overly pressured and feel like we are not doing enough when continually comparing ourselves with them. At all times, it is crucial to remember that each and every person has an entirely unique financial journey to go.

The first step in having a healthy relationship with money is the awareness of what is being spent, reasonable expectations and learning how to manage finances. It's important to keep in mind that our self worth is just not determined by our money, our savings or our material possessions.

Conclusion

If finances do become an issue and are difficult to handle, it helps to discuss it with someone we trust and/or talk to a professional. For the security of the soul, for ease in life, money is indispensable; but money is not all that makes us happy or prosperous. But getting a handle on our cash and emotions about it can help us to live a more balanced and peaceful life.
