World Alzheimer’s Day

We all have experienced a situation, where we enter a room and completely forget what was the reason behind our presence in that room. Such occasional forgetfulness is part of the human ageing process, but persistent memory loss, such as forgetting the name of your family members, getting lost on a well-travelled route, or losing core life memories, all signals something deeper happening inside your brain.

On World’s Alzheimer’s Day we should remember the importance of understanding cognitive decline in humans. Why does the brain lose specific information first, what is the reason behind this loss of information?

What Causes Alzheimer’s Disease?

A brain has a complex neurological network, so to understand Alzheimer, one needs to understand the functioning of a brain. The hippocampus, a horse-shaped structure located within the temporal lobe, is the place which is known as the brain's central processing unit. In a healthy brain, neurons communicate through electrochemical signals, but in a brain affected by Alzheimer's disease, this communication is not possible due to two abnormal structures. These two structures are:

  • Amyloid Plaques: an abnormal cluster of protein fragments that accumulate between nerve cells, blocking the essential communication.
  • Neurofibrillary Tangles: these are twisted fibres that build up inside cells, totally collapsing the transportation system needed for communication.

World Alzheimer Day 3

Why Do Some People Forget Names, Places And Memories?

It has been noticed that Alzheimer does not eliminate all the memory at once, it fades it slowly. There is a biological order in which memories fade.

  1. Names: Names are vague subjects, unlike objects, they don’t describe who they are. A cup is remembered because it has a function. Names are easily disconnected from the memory because they don’t rely on usage.
  2. Familiar Places And Routes:Your brain also has its own GPS system, i.e. the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus. With cell degeneration, lack of information movement, the brain's GPS system fails. Therefore, individuals lose their mental mapping capabilities even on the path towards their own house, on which they have travelled almost every single day.
  3. Memories: Alzheimer disease works on the principle of “last in, first out” pattern. Old memories such as childhood, school, weddings are stored in the brain as they have been reinforced over the years. But recent memories reside in the fragile, disrupted hippocampus, causing them to disappear.

World Alzheimer Day 2

When Should Memory Loss Be A Concern?

Memory loss is a normal part of ageing but it is very important to differentiate between normal ageing and memory loss caused by Alzheimer's.

Cognitive Function

Normal Ageing

Signs of Alzheimer

Recalling Names

Temporarily forgetting a name, but remembering it later

Consistently forgetting names of close family members

Daily Tasks

Occasionally needing help with complex technology

Struggling to complete familiar routines, like cooking a basic recipe.

Spatial Awareness

Forgetting where you parked in a large garage

Getting lost in a neighborhood driven through for 20 years

Conversational Flow

Pausing briefly to find the right word

Stopping mid-sentence and having no idea how to continue the communication

Time Orientation

Momentarily forgetting the day of the week

Losing track of dates, seasons, or the passage of long periods

Early Signs Of Alzheimer

They say prevention is better than cure, therefore recognising early symptoms can help you and your family members to seek proper medical attention on time. Here are some early signs you can pay attention to on:

  • Asking the same question multiple times in a conversation
  • Misplacing things and putting them in unreasonable places. For example, putting house keys in a refrigerator
  • Rapid mood changes: confusion, anxiety, suspicion
  • Trouble managing finances, understanding basic numbers

Can Alzheimer’s Disease Be Prevented Or Its Risk Reduced?

There is no cure for Alzheimer disease, but a little lifestyle changes can help in support of cognitive health. Including these activities can be used to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease:

  • Regular aerobic exercise increases blood flow to the brain.
  • Including healthy options in diet such as leafy vegetables, berries, nuts and whole foods.
  • Learning new skills such as language, instrument can really help in improving brain health.
  • Regular social interaction with friends, family and community members protects the brain against cognitive decline.
  • One should focus on getting 7 hours of sleep, as sleep helps the brain relax.
