priyanka mother

"The first time was when I was twelve. My mother and I and my brother were coming to America to stay with her sister and family. I was so fascinated. I was used to moving from one city to another. But when we came to America we were fascinated like my cousins never wore a uniform to school and all those teenage things, being friendly with boys... my mother ever cared but society in general did...

"When I told my mother I wanted to stay here, it was a very scary thing to tell your parent to leave me in another country with my sister. My mom left me with my aunt I stayed here for 4 years. When we shifted to New York, that is when I realised my roots.

"Living between India and America made me an amalgamation of the East & the West. I can go anywhere in the world and be anyone. I am not afraid of different cultures, languages. That happened because at a young age I chose to live in a completely different country without my parents. That made me feel fearless and that was the first time I kind of realised that I could shape my life by taking difficult decisions which maybe daunting and scary but when you jump into it, you can figure it out. No matter what is happening my life, in my hpome, the moment I walk out of the house I know the woman I want the world to see," said Priyanka.

On her career in America, Priyanka Chopra Jonas said that it is rare but also a bit scary.

"It is rare but it was very scary when that happened as well. But I think the fact that I had gone to school here and I had an understanding of being able to true to my Indian roots and be unique but at the same time be malleable enough to be a normal American consumer or a person. I do think that gave me an edge and also that I am a learner of life.

Priyanka too did what all new comers have to do and never took anything for granted. She stepped out and made her own contacts and approached people for work.

She said: "I did the work, I walked into Producer's rooms, agent's rooms and introduced myself saying Hi this is Priyanka Chopra and this is my body of work. This is what I am looking for."

Who is the woman you want to know?

I do feel there is a lot I want to do in the U.S. I want my work to mean a lot more and in America, I don't think that they have seen me doing the body of work that I have done in India. That is something that I am striving for. I am doing some amazing work this year, producing some really cool things. There is a movie I am doing with Universal with Mindy Kaling which is sorted of a take-off on my wedding, what happens when a Big Fat Indian wedding happens, which is really funny. I am doing a reality show with Amazon which again came out of my wedding but Nick and I are producing it together.

On her Production Company, which has done some amazing work as the films produced by her have won National Awards and recognised by the entire country and world at large, Priyanka shared that initially, it was her fear of shelflife as an actor that made her come up with the Purple Pebble Pictures with her mother.

"I believe that stories can come from anywhere. Your uber driver telling you a story, your grandmother telling you a story... stories are everywhere. Everyone has a story to tell. It is just ... what we do as entertainers is we create them in a way that they are presented in a way that magnificent fashion for you to consume.

"So we started our company together, my mom and I in India, which is called Purple Pebble Pictures which came from fearing for my shelf Life. How long will my career exist as an actor. But I did not want my company to be dependent on me as an actor. I wanted it to be on the outside of me. Then I moved to America and I started working here as well. Like this movie I am doing with Mindy Kaling is probably one the first to be a rom-com with all South-Asian cast," she said

She broke the glass ceiling and believes that it is the right time and has proven that if women push the envelope then they can be anywhere they want to be.

"There have not been many that have come through that I remember to be a mainstream romantic comedy. And to be able to do it with a partner like Universal and have their faith in us being able to do it, that is the kind of thing I want to do. To push the envelope. To have women in the helm of opportunities, to be in places, it will help us create that. Just having women believe in each other is... it is an amazing time in the world right now. In 2016 when Quantico came out, it was the first time an Indian had done a lead on a show," said Priyanka.

On her journey so far, Priyanka said: "In our business where we have to behave a certain behave, told be a certain way, I did all that in the beginning, I always wanted to be the one everyone likes, be the pleaser, to be the most popular girl in the business where I was working... at that time it was the rung in the ladder for me, but 20 years late when I look back, I don't know how it happened. It was so bizarre."

The "Sky is Pink" actress has always maintained and been very vocal on how her parents have been her pillars and how they have encouraged her.

"It is rare but I hope it becomes more normalised because if my parents had pushed their ambitions or their hopes for me on to me, I would definitely not be who I am. I remember my dad's mother saying no one is going to marry her, she cannot even cook, she is an actress" and my dad would always say that I will send a cook with her, she doesn't have to go into the kitchen if she doesn't want to. My mother did not know how to cook when they got marries, my dad taught her how to cook. My parents are very progressive and themselves. My dad fought my battles," she said.
