Gita Gopinath is an Indian-American boasting a two-decade-long career as an academic. In 2018, she became the first woman to be appointed the Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund, a financial advisory group. Currently, she is the Deputy Managing Director of the IMF.

Born in Kolkata, Gopinath belongs to a Malayali family related to A. K. Gopalan, an Indian communist politician. She completed her schooling in Mysore and B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Delhi.

In 2001, she completed her PhD in economics and joined the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business as an assistant professor (women leaders). From 2005 to 2022, Gopinath held the position of the John Zwanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University.
