Most people living in the west find it gross but in India, eating with your hands is actually backed with Ayurvedic and scientific reasoning! There are so many health benefits to the simple way of eating food and it starts with hygiene! Cutlery sure is popular and many Indians also sticky to the shiny instruments like myself (I am not neat with the hand usage), but most of our seniors eat with their hands, especially in the context of rice. Here are the reasons.

As per Ayurveda, every finger is an extension of the five elements. Our thumb represents space, from the forefinger comes air, the middle finger is fire, the ring finger signifies water and the little finger is Earth. These nerve endings of our fingertips boost digestion. We become more aware of what we are eating like textures, taste, and aromas.

When we eating with our hands, we are actually doing some muscle exercise, which increases our blood circulation. The movement of the hands in a way keeps the blood flow smoother.

Our body apparently has bacteria or flora, which resides in places like our mouth, hands, throat, intestines and gut which protect us from harmful bacteria. So, this flora protects our digestive system when we eat using our hands. It protects us from getting exposed to harmful bacteria, which in turn further stimulates the digestive system. However, do not forget to wash your hands before and after you eat!
