Your wedding day is all about getting your beauty sleep, doing skincare, getting ready, being the prettiest bride and clicking thousands of pictures. In the midst of all these beautiful memories, periods are the last thing that should be on your mind.

No one would like to feel bloated or lethargic on their wedding day when all they want to do is enjoy the day. However, who can stop your uterus from shedding the endometrium lining? Well, there is a way to delay your periods before your wedding.

We spoke to Dr Aruna Kumari, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Bangalore, to see if brides-to-be can take any medicine to get periods after their wedding. Here is what the expert shared.

Delay Periods Before Wedding

Dr Kumari suggests taking Norethisterone 5mg TDS three days before the expected date. For example, if your periods are due on the 26th of the month, you should start the medicine course on the 23rd.

This will help you delay menstruation. However, it is not 100% effective. The results will depend on the doses and where a woman is in her cycle.

Doses Of Period Delaying Medicine

Depending on where you are in your cycle, you will have to take two to three tablets every day until the day you want to delay menstruation. You will start bleeding within 10 days of stopping the medication.

Since the effectiveness of the medicine varies from one individual to another, you should not worry about if you get periods soon or if the medicine does not work for some time. In any case, we suggest you consult your doctor first before starting the medication. They can guide you better about your cycle and doses.

Side-Effects Of Period Delaying Medicine

Dr Kumari quoted a 2007 study which stated that a daily dose of Norethisterone 5mg TDS could be equivalent to 20mcg to 30mcg of combined oral contraceptive pills. Hence, not everyone can take the medicine to delay their periods. It could have a side-effect that you might not be able to deal with alone. Hence, always go for a brief consultation with your doctor.

Who Should Not Take Period Delaying Medicine

Dr Kumari suggests that a few people must not take this medicine. The list includes

  • Obese women
  • Strong FH of VTE (thromboembolism)
  • Carriers of thrombophilia
  • Personal h/o of VTE
  • Condition predisposing to VTE
  • Wheelchair-bound

For some people, medroxyprogesterone 10mg twice a day can be an alternative.

How Do Period Delaying Medicines Work?

how period delay medicines work

Periods are controlled by hormonal changes, which take place every month. In women, oestrogen (oestrogen and fertility), produced by the ovaries, causes the lining of the uterus to thicken in the first two weeks of every month.

After ovulation, progesterone maintains the internal lining of the uterus for the next two weeks to prepare it for the arrival of a fertilised egg. However, if pregnancy does not happen, levels of progesterone drop significantly causing the uterus to shed its lining and periods start.

Currently, period delay tablets are progesterone only pills like norethisterone or medroxyprogesterone acetate. “They work by keeping the progesterone levels in the body artificially higher for longer,” Dr Kumari added. Thus, it ultimately delays the date of menstruation.

But there is a limit to how long these medicines can maintain the thickness of the endometrial lining. Therefore, one can only delay periods by two weeks beyond the due date.
