Hernias are often linked with men, but women are also susceptible, particularly to umbilical and femoral hernias. These types, which occur around the belly button and groin, can be subtle and are frequently overlooked, leading to complications. We spoke to Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker, Consultant Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgeon at MetaHeal, Mumbai, to understand the symptoms, risk factors, and more essentials for timely diagnosis and effective treatment.
A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or tissue. Although hernias can develop in different parts of the body, certain types—such as umbilical and femoral hernias—are more common in women. Dr. Bhasker notes, “Femoral hernias are particularly prevalent in women and are located in the upper thigh or groin area.” Many women may ignore the early signs due to prioritising other responsibilities, which can delay detection and worsen the condition over time.

Hernias cannot be resolved with medication and typically require surgery to prevent worsening symptoms. There are several surgical approaches, with varying benefits:
Open Surgery: This involves a single, larger incision to push the herniated tissue back in place. It is highly effective but may have a longer recovery period. Dr. Bhasker mentions, “Open surgery works well for most hernias but can cause more post-surgical discomfort.”

Laparoscopic Surgery: Using tiny incisions, laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive and often preferred. This method reduces pain and hospital stays. “Laparoscopic surgery allows for faster recovery and smaller scars,” says Dr. Bhasker.
Robotic Surgery: A specialised form of laparoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted surgery offers high precision. Though not widely available, it provides similar recovery benefits and is increasingly popular for certain hernias.
