Camphor, known as Kapur in Hindi, has long held a special place in Indian households for poojas, rituals, and even home remedies. But beyond its religious and aromatic uses, camphor also carries significant health benefits, especially when consumed in controlled and diluted forms.
According to Dr Nidhi Pandey, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Wellness Expert, Delhi, drinking camphor water daily in moderation can support multiple aspects of your well-being. “Camphor is known in Ayurveda for its cooling and detoxifying properties. When used carefully, it can help balance the doshas and promote internal healing,” says Dr Pandey.
Here are five lesser-known but powerful health benefits of drinking camphor water daily, as shared by the expert.
Drinking camphor-infused water can help stimulate digestive enzymes, which support smoother digestion. “Camphor helps regulate Agni (digestive fire), which is central to overall health in Ayurveda,” explains Dr Pandey. It may relieve bloating, gas, and indigestion when taken in safe amounts.
Camphor has strong anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. Consuming camphor water may ease mild respiratory discomfort like nasal congestion, throat irritation, or seasonal cough. “It helps open up blocked airways and soothes irritation caused by allergens or pollutants,” notes Dr Pandey.

Camphor is often used in aromatherapy for its calming effect. Interestingly, a small amount of drinking water may have similar benefits. “Its cooling nature helps reduce stress and mental fatigue. It pacifies Pitta dosha, which governs emotions like anger and anxiety,” says Dr Pandey.
Camphor water acts as a gentle detoxifier, flushing out toxins and promoting better liver function. Dr Pandey suggests that a controlled intake over time can support internal cleansing and help maintain clearer skin and improved metabolism.
While camphor is not a direct weight loss agent, its effects on metabolism and digestion may indirectly support weight management. “Better digestion means better nutrient absorption and reduced toxin buildup, which plays a role in maintaining healthy body weight,” says Dr Pandey.
Dr Pandey strongly advises that camphor should only be used in edible form and in very small, controlled amounts. Overuse can be harmful.
Ancient practices often hold modern-day value, and camphor water is one such example. When used correctly under expert guidance, this traditional remedy may offer simple but effective support for your daily wellness goals.
