Arthritis is one of the most common bone-related issues which mostly affects older generations. But things are changing now and even younger women are getting affected with arthritis. According to research by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2022, 21.5% of adults in the United States aged 18 and older who were diagnosed with arthritis were women, compared to 16.1% of men. The aforementioned data is alarming and needs immediate action. Dr Hemant Sharma, Chairman - Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram shared his insights on arthritis in young women and its causes.

Can Young Women Suffer From Arthritis

Dr Hemant Sharma said, "Yes, arthritis affects young ladies, even though it's typically associated with older people.” As it happens, there are different kinds of arthritis, and some can appear at a young age. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune illness where the body's immune system destroys its own joints, is one of the most prevalent types of arthritis among young women. This results in discomfort, oedema, and stiffness, which can greatly affect day-to-day functioning.

Cause Of Arthritis In Young Women

Young women's arthritis can be caused by a variety of circumstances. A major contributing factor is genetic predisposition, which means that if you have a family history of arthritis, you may be more likely to get it. Additionally, inflammation and joint problems can be brought on by hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause. Dr Hemant Sharma further added that early onset arthritis can be brought on by infections, traumas, or overuse of joints, particularly in sports.”

Signs To Look Out For

Young women who have arthritis may have stiffness, oedema, joint discomfort, and decreased range of motion. These symptoms may also be accompanied by fatigue and general discomfort, which can impair general well-being. These symptoms may appear and disappear in certain situations, or they may get worse over time in other situations.

Therapy And Management

Although there is no known cure for arthritis (expert approved food for arthritis), with the correct care, its symptoms can be effectively treated. Common treatments include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs, and regular exercise. Reducing joint strain and discomfort can be achieved by eating a balanced diet, exercising, and controlling weight. Surgery could be suggested in extreme circumstances.
