However, the increasing demand for saffron and lack of awareness among people often result in scams or putting people into buying fake saffron. In light of the same, we spoke to Ambika Setia, Nutritionist, Apollo Spectra Delhi, Chirag Enclave. Scroll down to learn how you can identify real and fake saffron.

How To Identify Between Real and Fake Kesar?

Here are the factors you can consider while purchasing Kesar to ensure its authenticity:

Conduct Water Test

The water test is one of the simplest and easiest ways to find out if the saffron is authentic or not. Take a few strands of saffron and let it steep in a glass full of water for more than an hour. If saffron starts to release its golden hue or the water starts to turn yellow, then you can rest assured that your saffron is pure. Fake or chemical-based saffron releases a lot of dark red colour, and threads also turn white over time.

Check The Aroma

Saffron is known for its aroma. So, if your saffron (benefits of saffron water) has a beautiful floral aroma with a hint of sweetness, then that's the real saffron. Fake saffron may often smell like grass, tobacco-like, or metallic smell as it is made with chemicals and additives.
