Whether oily or dry, Holi colours tend to suck every bit of moisture from the skin, disrupt its pH balance, and harm it in many ways. In our recent series, we have been publishing DIY methods according to every skin type to remove colours without causing more harm to the skin.
Therefore, we approached Shahnaz Husain, a skin and hair expert, to learn about homemade masks and scrubs that will help women with oily skin get rid of the colour without being left with redness, inflammation, bruises and injuries.
Issues With Oily Skin
Oily skin has overactive sebum-producing glands. “The oozing of oil on the dermal layer thickens and enlarges pores,” Husain said. Therefore, people with such a skin type have a coarse texture. Moreover, open pores are more vulnerable to blackheads, pimples, spots and acne.
Cleansing
For cleansing, women with such a dermal layer must use a cleanser specially formulated for normal to oily skin type. You can also use a cleansing lotion and face wash. If you have issues like blackheads, spots, acne and pimples, Husain suggested using medicated soaps or cleansers.
Such chemically-induced products rinse off impurities without disturbing the acid-to-alkaline balance.
Homemade Cleanser
In a bowl, add half a tablespoon of lemon juice and a teaspoon of cucumber juice. Apply the mixture gently on your face and massage it in circular motions. Let it stay on your skin for 10 minutes, then wash off with normal water.
You can also dip a cotton pad in water and gently wipe off the cleanser. The skin and hair expert also points out that an astringent lotion can help to do away with oiliness. After cleansing your face, you can wipe your skin with the lotion using a soft cotton pad.
If astringent lotion seems harsh, you can mix it with rose water and apply it to your face. Rose water also acts as a toner. You can also mix it with cucumber juice in equal quantities to get rid of excess sebum.

Homemade Scrub
Take a tablespoon of besan or gram flour in a bowl. Add a tablespoon of curd and aloe vera gel to it and mix everything well to form a thick paste.
Apply this scrub to your face and leave it to dry for about 20 minutes. Before rinsing it off, rub it gently in circular motions. Most of the scrub will come off quickly. Wash your face with normal water in the end.
Exfoliation is crucial to cleaning pores because Holi colours can penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin. Scrub will allow you to clean the pores deeply while also helping you get rid of dead skin cells, refine pores and keep the skin free from hardened oil.

However, you must ensure to not go overboard with rubbing your face. It can lead to inflammation, redness and bruises because the skin is already vulnerable.
Homemade Moisturiser
Husain suggests using some amount of aloe vera gel or juice to moisturise your skin. It will help with dryness, provide relief from redness caused by the harshness of colour and soothe any burns or inflammation. Aloe vera is known for being the go-to natural ingredient for every skin type.
