Mr Sameer Hamdare, Zonal Technical Manager at Streax Professional says that sunny days after long winter spell might be a big relief but prolonged exposure to the Sun can be harmful to our hair. The UV rays can damage the outside cover of the hair strand and can cause dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness. It’s worst if your hair is coloured or recently treated by chemicals. Chemically treated hair is bound to have a lasting impact of Sun exposure as compared with the normal hair.

You can’t avoid going out and therefore precautions and care should be your choice if you love your new hair treatment. So, what can be done? Here are some guidelines by Sameer Hamdare that you can follow to shield your chemically treated hair from the Sun this summer:

Timely shampooing and conditioning

shampooing

Regularly washing off your hair with shampoo and conditioner which are suitable for coloured and chemically treated hair is very important. Cleaning the hair and the scalp 2-3 times a week helps to protect the damage caused by the Sun. If the scalp is getting greasy, try using with dry shampoo in between washes. Also, avoid washing your hair every day as this can make the hair colour to fade faster.

Use Silver/Purple Shampoo for blond colour hair

Try using silver/purple shampoo if you have a blonde colour (global/hi-lights). Purple pigment shampoo is specially formulated to preserve blonde hair colour and neutralises the brassy or yellow undertones.

Deep condition your hair

Apply a deep conditioner once a week to keep your hair healthy. When your hair is exposed to the Sun regularly, it is important to hydrate your hair. A deep conditioning treatment or using a hair mask would do the work.

Guidelines to follow before stepping out:

Wear a hat or scarf

The best preventative care you can take here is wearing a hat or a headscarf

Loosely tie your hair while on the beach vacation

Summertime usually means outdoor workouts and beach visits where wet hair gets tied up and potentially tangled. Try not to use tight rubber bands, which can damage hair and avoid tight topknots that can put pressure on the hairline.

Avoid fine-tooth comb on wet hairs

Don’t step out with wet hair and avoid combing your hair with fine-tooth comb especially on the wet hair.

Wear protective hairstyles

To prevent hair from the Sun’s damage, you can avoid direct contact with the Sun by styling your hair in stylish braids, various buns and accessorising it with scarf and bandanas.

Sunny day hair care routine for chemically treated hair:

  • Avoid blow-drying or heat styling on your hair.
  • Get your hair trimmed regularly.
  • Use shampoo which is especially for colour or chemically treated hair.
  • Use a conditioner after every shampoo and leave it for 5-10 mins.
  • Use a serum every day.

Products recommended for chemically treated hair to avoid damage from the Sun:

Shampoo and Conditioner: Use shampoo and conditioner which is suitable for colour and chemical treated hair.

Leave in conditioner (spray): Leave-in conditioner will not only moisturize your hair but also add a shield that fights the heat from both the Sun and styling tools.

argan oil

While you enjoy your summer holidays, your treated hair can remain healthy and safe if you take smart care of them.
