A Little Awareness Goes a Long Way

“Is it just menopause… or should I be worried?”

As a female surgical oncologist, I am often asked this question. The reality is that you will experience so many changes related to menopause that separating normal experiences from experiences worth looking further into might be difficult. Additionally, many menopausal symptoms are overlapped by early cancer symptoms, which of course contributes to the confusion, fear, and anxiety. This is why it is so important to have a little knowledge to help you.

Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 when your cycle ceases permanently (meaning you have not bleed for the last 12 months). The changes you are having will mainly be due to fluctuating hormones. Cancer occurs when excessive abnormal cells grow and spread in all locations of the body, including reproductive organs. Sometimes, menopause and cancer may present similarly - but you will know if symptoms persist or change over time.

Common Symptoms of Menopause

Most menopausal symptoms are generally harmless - although uncomfortable at times. They tend to settle as your body adjusts. You might notice:

● Periods becoming irregular, then stopping altogether

● Hot flashes or night sweats

● Mood swings or irritability

Common Symptoms of Menopause

● Trouble sleeping

● Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex

● Bladder changes like urgency or leaks

● Weight gain, bloating, or changes in body shape

● Fatigue or joint aches

These are all part of the hormonal rollercoaster. But one symptom always raises a red flag, if you have any bleeding after your periods have stopped, it should be evaluated right away; it could indicate uterine or cervical cancer. Similarly, incessant bloating or uncomfortable stomach pain deserves evaluation.

The “Red Flag” Signs

If you notice any of the following, don’t brush them off:

Vaginal bleeding after menopause

● Continual abdominal or pelvic pain

● Unexplained weight loss

● Severe fatigue that is not resolved with rest

● Bloating, anorexia, or early satiety

● Unexplainable bowel or bladder habit changes

These symptoms do not necessarily mean cancer, but do mean that your body is requesting evaluation.

When to Evaluate ?

Annual symptoms of menopause resolve or are manageable with time. Unlike menopausal changes, cancer symptoms don’t settle with time. When something feels off or continues to worsen, it’s best to get it checked by your doctor. Early detection does change everything. The earlier the detection, the easier the treatment, and the higher the odds.

When to Evaluate

Regular screenings after the age of 45, per year or at least per comfortable interval are great modalities to consider as part of preventative care for detetection.
Think of these screening as self-care noting the distinction to check these items off the "to do" list.
