As we are in the last month of 2022, we are looking back at the winning moments for women that defined the year. They will go down in history and be remembered forever by the generations to come.
These moments showed the world that women are doing everything in their power to make a difference. These wins defined that women will not stop until there is equality and equity in the country. Here is a look back at 2022 where we got the hope that the world would be shaping up for the better.
Mother Can Decide The Surname Of Child (July 2022)
In July 2022, the apex court of the country gave autonomy to mothers to decide the surname of their kids. The verdict said, “The mother, being the only natural guardian of the child, has the right to decide the surname of the child.”
More Medal Events For Women (August 2022)

In the Commonwealth Games 2022, there were more medal events for women than for men. The games were held in Birmingham, England. This was the first time women’s cricket was introduced into the games and the Indian team brought home the silver medal.
Mirabai Chanu, PV Sindhu, Anahat Singh, Nikhat Zareen and Priyanka Goswami were among the women athletes who made the country proud.
All-Women Navy Crew Completed Sea Surveillance Mission (August 2022)

This year, an all-women navy crew created history by completing the Arabian Sea surveillance mission. They went through months of comprehensive training before the ‘historical sortie’.
Equal Rights (September 2022)
In September, the Supreme Court of India declared that every woman has the right to legal and safe abortions between 20 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. It does not matter whether a woman is married or not, she has the right to choose whether or not to take the pregnancy to term.
The apex court said that since a foetus develops inside a woman’s body, she has complete autonomy to make the decision. It added, “We would be remiss in not recognising that intimate partner violence is the reality and can take the form of rape.”
Highest Number Of Supreme Court Judges (September 2022)
Women judges have been a part of the Supreme Court. However, in September 2022, four women judges were elected to be a part of the apex court. The list included the names of Justices B V Nagarathna, Indira Banerjee, Bela M Trivedi and Hima Kohli.

Marital Rape Is Rape (September 2022)
While Indian women are still struggling to get legislation to criminalise marital rape, the Supreme Court said, “Marital rape is rape.” This statement was passed while the bench was hearing a plea of an unmarried woman who wanted to terminate her pregnancy beyond 20 to 24 weeks.
The court pointed to the reality that many women are subjected to sexual abuse by their partners and end up conceiving. Clearing the air, the SC said the definition of rape would also include marital rape. Hence, married or unmarried women can seek legal and safe abortions in the country.

BCCI Declared Equal Pay For Women Cricketers (October 2022)

One of the biggest wins for Indian women in 2022 was when BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced equal pay for women. Female and male cricketers would now earn the same amount.
Shah called it a step in the direction of tackling gender discrimination in the country. In the past, many women cricketers opened up about the pay-parity issue. Supporting the announcement, Mithali Raj said, “This is a historic decision for women’s cricket in India.”

Women Sailors Joined The Indian Army For The First Time (December 2022)
This year, the Indian Navy has inducted women sailors for the first time in its history. Among 3,000 Agniveers, 341 were women.
Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said, “Come next year, we are looking at women officers being inducted across all branches and not just the 7-8 branches they're restricted to as of today.”
