On Thursday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced that India's centrally-contracted women cricketers will be earning the same match fee as their male counterparts for appearances in international matches. It will be in accordance with the board's new pay equity policy.
Shah called it the first step towards tackling gender discrimination.
The announcement was shared by Shah via Twitter. He tweeted, “I’m pleased to announce
@BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket.”

As per the policy, both men and women cricketers will be paid ₹15 lakhs for test matches, ₹6 lakhs for ODI matches and ₹3 lakhs for T20I.
“The @BCCIWomen cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind,” Shah tweeted.

Appreciating the announcement, former Indian women’s cricket team’s captain Mithali Raj tweeted, “This is a historic decision for women’s cricket in India! The pay equity policy along with the WIPL next year, we are ushering into a new era for women's cricket in India. Thank you @JayShah Sir & the @BCCI for making this happen. Really happy today.”

The Indian women's cricket team recently won the Asia Cup in Bangladesh by beating Sri Lanka in the final by eight wickets. The team also won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games for the time in 2022.
The first women's IPL is set to take place in 2023 which is believed to be a massive boost for women’s cricket in the country.
