Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai’s Early Life And Legal Roots
Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai hails from a family deeply rooted in public service. His father, Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai, fondly remembered as 'Dadasaheb', was a towering Dalit leader and a former Governor of Bihar.
Justice Gavai began his legal journey on March 16, 1985, when he enrolled at the Bar. Initially, he worked under the guidance of the late Raja S Bhonsale, former Advocate General and judge of the Bombay High Court. However, he started his independent practice 1987 onwards with focus on Constitutional and Administrative Law, primarily before the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.
He also served as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench in 1992, and later, in 2000, was appointed Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor, representing the state in several significant cases.

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai’s Judicial Career, From High Court To Supreme Court
Justice Gavai was elevated to the judiciary as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003, and became a Permanent Judge on November 12, 2005. Over the years, he presided over benches at Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji, and handled a broad spectrum of legal matters.
Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was appointed to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Following the tradition of seniority within the judiciary, he is now poised to become the next Chief Justice of India. His time in the top post is expected to last a little more than six months, concluding on November 23, 2025, the day he turns 65 which is the official retirement age for Supreme Court judges.
