In today’s time, we all are stuck to our phones all day long. This has been a boon as well as a curse. One of the major pros of this is that many people got employment opportunities and are earning by just sitting at their home. Apart from this, people get a chance to share their talents and knowledge with the world. All around the globe, people use their phones and the internet to gain knowledge and learn new things with just a click.

Debarati and Amlan are making their contribution with their youtube channel, Creative Hours. Through their channel, they show how waste material can be turned into something useful. As they crossed the mark of 800K subscribers, Bhavishya Bir from HerZindagi had an exclusive chat with them. Read on to know how they broke the stereotype of making “practical” life decisions and started their own youtube channel.

How was the journey to reach more than 800k followers?

We, Debarati & Amlan, from Berhampore, West Bengal, started our channel on 3rd April 2018, with just 4-5 subscribers. After 3 months we got more than 1k subscribers & after working hard for approx 4 years, we have more than 800k subscribers now. So, you can say, it was the most difficult journey & it's getting more difficult day by day because competition is getting tough on these social media platforms.

What inspired you to start this channel?

Well, this is a big story but let me tell you in short. Actually, I(Debarati) was always fond of studying art and craft and also loved painting. At the same time, Amlan liked to do photography and editing. But in a middle-class family, we aren’t allowed to study these kinds of things. So, due to family pressure, I was studying botany honours and Amlan was studying engineering. We both went to tuition together in the year 2009 but were not very good friends. Suddenly, in the year 2016, we met again and became very good friends. At that time both of us had completed our graduation and were looking for a job. Amlan was working in a private company & I was selling my paintings. There was even a time when I had to sell a lot of my big paintings for just Rs 70.

Both of us wanted to do something different, independently. But our families wanted us to do jobs. We were both mentally depressed & frustrated. Gradually Amlan learned that he is very fond of editing and making small cinematic videos and suddenly he suggested to me that why not both of us start a youtube channel in which I will make crafts and he will edit and upload the videos. So, this is how we were inspired to start our small YouTube channel, Creative Hours and we two of us became each other's inspiration.

What is special about your channel?

In our channel, we basically do crafts from waste material. Wasted material, like, plastic bottles, cardboard etc pollute our environment badly. So, we don't throw them. Instead, we collect them from our own home & from roads also & then recycle them into something useful.

For eg - you can recycle a plastic bottle into a cute pen stand.

This is what we especially enjoy doing in our channel, otherwise, our viewers can say what is special about our channel.

How do you manage to curate content regularly?

We have 2 channels. We upload 3 to 4 videos in a week on both channels. So, we have to work on 7-8 videos in a week & you can understand that it's sometimes very difficult to manage but still we love our work so it never seems like work to us. It's like a challenge. You just have to win this challenge anyhow.

How does it feel to have so many followers?

We never thought about 800k subscribers at the time of starting this channel. So, it feels like a dream to us but at the same time, we become sad sometimes because we don't get many views. It seems like people like to see dance, comedy, dramas much more than crafts.

Is there a message that you want to convey to your followers?

All we would like to say to our followers is that we belong to a very middle-class family. We didn't have expensive cameras or tripods. But we had two dreams and both of us never gave up on those dreams. There was no one to support us except my (Debarati’s) mom, yet we kept trying to make our dreams come true. Sometimes there were lighting problems, sometimes our phone would turn off, we have to use a stick as a tripod. There were many such problems, but both of us used to work hard. We are telling you this because if you also have any dreams, then give your life a chance to fulfil them. Instead of doing something under family pressure or following someone else, identify yourself. Know yourself, know who you are and identify your talent. You will never feel tired working for your dreams. So, go on with your passion & make your dreams come true.
