A Class 8 student from a small village located in the Amravati division of Maharashtra is turning to be an inspiration for all by becoming a district collector for a day. With International Women’s Day just around the corner, leaders, entrepreneurs, and several organisations are coming up with unique ideas to mark the special occasion on March 8. The District Magistrate and Collector of Buldhana, Suman Rawat Chandra is winning hearts with her inspiring step, wherein she decided to make schoolgirls from the Buldhana village collectors for a day. While she has shortlisted a few girls to take up the post, Poonam Deshmukh, from Padoli Zilla Parishad school became the first to take up the prestigious post on Monday. After her on Tuesday, another 9th standard student was made the district collector.

Taking to Twitter, Suman Rawat Chandra announced making Poonam collector for a day. “#CollectorForADay #IWD2020 To a run up the International Women's Day, for a week few of the bright girls vl be given n opportunity to be Collector for a day. Today’s Collector Zilla Parishad School’s bright star Poonam Deshmukh.@NITIAayog @CMOMaharashtra,” she wrote alongside a photo where Poonam can be seen sitting on collector’s chair in the official chamber. Suman, whose initiative is empowering and inspiring young schoolgirls, can also be seen all smiles in the snap. 


In another post, the District Magistrate and Collector of Buldhana, who is an IAS officer of the 2010 cadre, sang praises for the young schoolgirl. “#CollectorForADay Poonam Deshmukh smartly conducting her work as a Collector today. She is confident and inspired to be successful one day and took a pledge to work hard for the same and also inspire other girls @unwomenindia @DrRPNishank @MinistryWCD @smritiirani,” she wrote sharing a few more snaps of Poonam Deshmukh. 

Twitterati are expressing much appreciation for Suman Rawat Chandra’s move. While one wrote, “Your initiative always inspired us mam nice to see first DM of Buldhana to carried such nice work.” another Twitter user said, “Wow! This gesture will have such a positive impact on these kids and keeps motivating them to reach where they wish to be in their service to the nation. Respect. @oiseaulibre3 Folded hands @IASassociation @DoPTGoI.”

Reportedly, the initiative which began on March 2 will end on the day of International Women’s Day, March 8. Poonam was not just made the collector for the namesake, she also did a few works, wherein she spoke to media, participated in an event, Lokshahi Din, and also took stock of the unseasonal rainfall in the district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also decided to take a unique approach to celebrate the upcoming women’s day. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, he revealed that he will be giving his social media accounts to inspirational women on the auspicious occasion.

“This Women's Day, I will give away my social media accounts to women whose life & work inspire us. This will help them ignite motivation in millions. Are you such a woman or do you know such inspiring women? Share such stories using #SheInspiresUs,” wrote PM Modi.
